Europasaurus holgeri

Europasaurus: The Fun-Sized Giant from Jurassic Germany

Meet Europasaurus holgeri—the little sauropod with big dinosaur dreams! Living about 154 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period, this plant-eater roamed what is now northern Germany. While most sauropods (like Brachiosaurus or Diplodocus) were absolutely massive, Europasaurus was pint-sized by comparison—growing only about 20 feet long. That’s because it lived on an island, where limited resources helped it evolve into a mini version of its gigantic cousins!

Europasaurus is a fascinating example of “island dwarfism,” a process where big animals get smaller over time to adapt to isolated environments. Despite its shorter size, it had all the classic sauropod features: a long neck, small head, and a body built for steady grazing. It’s a reminder that evolution can get creative—and sometimes, smaller is smarter.
