Around 160 million years ago, during the Late Jurassic, Yi qi (“strange wing”) took to the skies over what is now Hebei Province, China. Its full scientific name, Yi qi, reflects its most extraordinary feature—long, rod-like bones extending from its wrists that supported a wing membrane, much like a bat’s. This tiny scansoriopterygid dinosaur was unlike any other, representing a unique—and short-lived—evolutionary experiment in flight.
